The Red Light Test: How a Simple Experiment Revealed the Hidden Numbness of the Balding Scalp
During a routine red light therapy session, an unplanned observation: the face, sides and back of the head felt heat instantly, while the M-shape corners and crown felt nothing for three to four minutes. Here is what that delay reveals about blood flow, fibrosis and nerve function — and how to run the test on your own scalp at home.
A Second Window Onto the Same Problem
In the previous posts, we explored how hijama can reveal the hidden state of the scalp through the colour and flow of the blood it extracts. Dark, sluggish, almost black blood from thinning zones tells a story of poor circulation and trapped waste. Bright red, free-flowing blood from healthy zones tells the opposite story.
But what if you don't have access to hijama? What if you want a simpler, non-invasive way to check the health of your scalp at home?
As it turns out, a common red light therapy device — something many people already own — can provide a powerful diagnostic window into the exact same problem. And this was discovered not through a formal study, but through a simple, unplanned observation.
The Accidental Experiment
During a routine red light therapy session, an interesting pattern emerged. The head was shaved down completely. The red light was positioned over the scalp at a moderate intensity. As the light was moved across different areas, something unexpected happened:
- On the face: the heat from the red light could be felt almost immediately.
- On the sides of the head near the ears: heat was felt almost immediately.
- On the back of the head above the neck: heat was felt almost immediately.
- On the M-shape recession zones and the crown: nothing at first. No heat. No warmth. It took a full three to four minutes before any heat sensation registered.
What the Delayed Heat Sensation Reveals
This was not a planned test. But the pattern was impossible to ignore. The areas where hair was thinning were not feeling the same heat as the areas where hair remained strong. The balding zones were acting as if they were partially numb.
The delayed heat response points to three overlapping problems that should sound very familiar if you have been following this series: poor blood flow, tissue fibrosis, and sensory blunting.
1. Poor Blood Flow (Hypoperfusion)
Heat from red light is absorbed primarily by haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in your blood. In healthy, well-perfused tissue, blood acts as a thermal conductor. It absorbs the heat and spreads it quickly through the network of tiny vessels. Your nerve endings detect this temperature change almost instantly.
In the balding zones, the microvascular network is severely depleted. Remember what we discussed in the hijama posts — capillary rarefaction. The smallest blood vessels have withered away. The remaining vessels are narrow, sluggish, and poorly distributed. There is simply less haemoglobin available to absorb the heat, so it cannot spread efficiently. The result is a delayed thermal response.
This is the same hypoxia revealed by the dark, thick blood during hijama. Two different windows. Same reality.
2. Tissue Fibrosis (The Compacted Soil)
Remember the compacted soil analogy? The balding scalp is not soft and loose. It is tight, dense, and fibrotic. Chronic inflammation has caused collagen to build up around the follicles, creating a stiff, scar-like environment.
Dense tissue conducts heat poorly. Think of a metal spoon versus a wooden spoon placed in the same pot of hot water. The metal heats up almost instantly. The wood takes much longer. The fibrotic scalp is like the wood — it resists thermal conductivity because it is stiff and poorly hydrated.
Your delayed heat sensation is not just about blood flow. It is also a measure of how dense and compacted the tissue has become.
3. Sensory Blunting (Mild Numbness)
This is perhaps the most overlooked finding, and the most important one to understand.
We discussed the deep, localized itch in the M-shape zones as a sign of DHT-driven inflammation. Mast cells degranulate, releasing histamine near nerve endings. This causes the familiar itch of active hair loss.
But there is a second phase to this inflammatory process that is rarely discussed. When inflammation becomes chronic, the nerve endings themselves begin to suffer:
- The fibrosis physically compresses the delicate nerve fibres.
- The poor blood flow starves them of oxygen.
- The constant exposure to inflammatory chemicals damages their outer membranes.
- Over time, they become desensitized and stop firing normally.
The Itch–Numbness Paradox Explained
The result is a strange paradox: the area itches but also feels numb. How can the same zone do both at once? The answer lies in the different types of nerve fibres that serve different functions:
- C-fibres carry itch and slow, dull pain — they are over-activated by mast cell histamine, producing the chronic itch.
- A-delta fibres carry sharp pain and temperature — they are compressed and blunted by fibrosis and hypoxia, producing the numbness.
A Hallmark of Chronic Neuroinflammation
These two fibre types sit side by side in the same tissue, but they respond in opposite ways to the hostile environment. The C-fibres are being screamed at by inflammatory chemicals. The A-delta fibres are being suffocated and crushed.
This sensory dissociation — itch and numbness coexisting in the same patch of skin — is a hallmark of chronic neuroinflammation. It is seen in conditions like diabetic neuropathy and post-shingles nerve pain. The balding scalp exhibits a localized version of the same process, confined to the DHT-sensitive zones.
How This Aligns with the Hijama Findings
The red light observation is not a separate discovery. It is the same story told through a different sense. Compare what each window shows:
- Healthy zones — hijama: bright red, free-flowing blood. Red light: immediate heat sensation.
- Balding zones (M-shape, crown) — hijama: dark, thick, sluggish blood. Red light: delayed heat sensation of three to four minutes.
- Pain response — hijama: intense pain on suction in balding zones. Red light: numbness to heat in the same zones.
- Tissue quality — hijama: resistant to expansion by the cup. Red light: resistant to heat conduction.
One Underlying Reality
Hijama gave us the visual evidence. Red light therapy gave us the thermal evidence. Both point to the same conclusion: the balding scalp is a congested, oxygen-starved, fibrotic, and neurologically altered tissue environment.
The face, sides, and back of the head are soft, mobile, well-perfused, and sensitive. The M-shape and crown are tight, dense, poorly perfused, and partially numb. This is not a problem of the whole head. It is a localized disease process playing out in the genetically vulnerable zones.
A Practical At-Home Assessment Tool
The beauty of this observation is that nearly anyone can replicate it at home. You don't need a medical degree or expensive equipment. If you have a red light therapy device — or even a simple infrared heat lamp — you can map your own scalp:
- Shave your head, or part your hair thoroughly to expose the scalp.
- Position a moderate-strength red light device at a fixed distance from your head.
- Slowly move the light across different zones: face, sides, back, M-shape corners, and crown.
- Pay close attention to how quickly you feel heat in each area.
- Compare the thinning zones to the healthy zones.
- A significant delay — 30 seconds or more — in the thinning areas suggests poor perfusion and fibrosis.
How to Track Progress
Repeat this test every few weeks. As you correct internal deficiencies (iron, vitamin D, B12), reduce inflammation, and apply mechanical therapies (hijama, massage, microneedling), you should observe:
- Faster heat detection in the previously numb zones.
- A more uniform heat sensation across the entire scalp.
- A narrowing of the gap between healthy and balding zones.
What This Means for Treatment
This gives you another functional marker to track alongside the ones from the hijama case study: suction pain decreasing, blood colour lightening, bruise resolution accelerating, and the chronic itch diminishing.
The numbness is not permanent. It is not a sign that the tissue is dead beyond repair. It is a symptom of a reversible environment, and the same interventions that improve hijama markers should also improve nerve function and heat perception:
- Iron repletion restores oxygen delivery to the starving nerve endings.
- Anti-inflammatory support quiets the cytokine storm that damages nerve membranes.
- Hijama extraction removes the stagnant, waste-filled fluid that suffocates the tissue.
- Mechanical decompression relieves the physical pressure of fibrosis on the nerves.
The Larger Picture
As the tissue environment improves, the nerves can heal. Sensitivity returns. The scalp, once starved and compressed, regains its ability to sense normally, and the gap between healthy and balding zones begins to close.
This accidental red light discovery reinforces the central theme of this entire series: hair loss is not just about the hair. It is about the environment in which the hair grows.
The balding scalp gives us clear signals — if we know how to listen. The dark blood from hijama. The deep localized itch. The delayed heat sensation from red light. All of these are the tissue crying out, telling us it is starved, congested, and compressed.
The good news is that these signals are also guideposts. They tell us where to intervene, and whether our interventions are working. Correct the deficiencies. Extract the waste. Loosen the fibrosis. Restore the circulation. And then watch as the scalp — slowly, gradually — begins to feel alive again.
