The Dark Blood Clue: What Hijama Reveals About Your Scalp, and Why Your Nutrient Levels Matter First

During a hijama session there is something you can see with your own eyes — the blood from a healthy area is bright red, while the blood from a bald patch runs dark and slow. Here is what that colour means, and the question nobody asks enough: can hijama even work if your body is running on empty?

Two Dots Worth Connecting

In the first two parts of this series, we explored how hijama physically removes DHT-laden waste and decompresses fibrotic scalp tissue. But there’s something else that happens during a hijama session — something you can see with your own eyes — that tells a powerful story about the health of your scalp.

The Colour of the Blood: A Window Into Your Scalp

Imagine you’re undergoing a hijama session. The first cup is placed on the back of your head, where hair is still thick and healthy. The incisions are made, the cup is reapplied, and the blood that flows out is bright, vivid red. It’s thin, free-flowing, and looks alive.

Now the next cup goes onto a bald patch — perhaps the temple, where the M-shape has formed. The cup fills, but the blood is different. It’s darker. Much darker. Sometimes almost black. It oozes out sluggishly, like thick syrup rather than flowing water.

This is not a coincidence. This is a direct visual clue of what’s happening beneath the skin in balding areas.

  • Bright red blood indicates healthy, well-oxygenated blood that has circulated efficiently through a rich network of tiny vessels. The tissue it came from is well-fed, well-drained, and metabolically active. This is the blood of a scalp that supports strong hair growth.
  • Dark, sluggish blood is deoxygenated blood that has been sitting, stagnant, in a depleted microcirculation. In a balding zone, many of the smallest capillaries have withered away. The blood that remains moves so slowly that by the time it reaches the surface, all its oxygen has been used up and waste products have accumulated. It is old, congested blood trapped in fibrotic tissue — and the darkness you see is the colour of hypoxia, or oxygen starvation.

Reading the Soil by Its Colour

The same way a farmer knows compacted, dead soil by its colour and texture, a hijama therapist and the patient can see the difference between healthy scalp tissue and struggling bald tissue, simply by observing what comes out.

This visual evidence confirms what we’ve been saying all along: the balding scalp is a congested, poorly nourished environment. And hijama, by physically extracting that dark, stagnant blood, is literally removing the visual proof of the problem.

Before You Even Think About Cupping: The Internal Foundation

Now, let’s zoom out from the scalp to the whole body.

You can cup, derma roll, and apply the most expensive oils in the world. You can do everything right on the outside. But if your body is deficient in the raw materials it needs to build hair, none of it will work. Not hijama. Not PRP. Nothing.

Hair is not essential for survival, so when the body is running low on nutrients, hair growth is one of the first functions it shuts down. It redirects whatever resources it has to your heart, your brain, your lungs. Hair is a luxury, and a depleted body cannot afford luxuries.

Here are the non-negotiable tests and nutritional pillars worth checking before investing time, money, and hope into any hair regrowth protocol.

The Essential Blood Tests: The Iron Panel

Iron is the cornerstone of hair growth. Your hair follicle cells divide faster than almost any other cells in your body. They need a constant oxygen supply, and iron is what carries that oxygen in your blood.

A simple haemoglobin check is not enough. You need a full iron panel:

  • Ferritin — your body’s iron storage protein, and the single most important number for hair. A level below 40 ng/mL can cause shedding; for healthy regrowth, many practitioners aim above 70 ng/mL.
  • Serum iron — the amount of iron actually circulating in your blood at the moment of the test.
  • TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity) — how much capacity your blood has to carry iron. When it is high, it means your body is asking for more iron.
  • TSAT (Transferrin Saturation) — the percentage of iron-binding sites actually occupied. Low TSAT means the iron on hand is insufficient.
  • Transferrin — the protein that shuttles iron around. Abnormal levels point to deeper issues with iron metabolism.
  • Haemoglobin — the oxygen-carrying molecule. Low haemoglobin means your entire body, including your scalp, is short of oxygen.

Why Empty Iron Stores Undo the Work

If your iron stores are empty, your follicles will simply stop producing strong hair. The hijama cup will pull out dark, stagnant blood, but the body won’t have the building blocks to replace it with healthy, oxygen-rich blood.

The Supporting Cast: Vitamin D, Zinc, and B12

Vitamin D is actually a hormone, and it plays a direct role in creating new hair follicles and waking up dormant ones. Deficiency is incredibly common, especially in those who spend most of their time indoors. Low vitamin D has been consistently linked to both male and female pattern hair loss, as well as autoimmune shedding conditions like alopecia areata.

Zinc is the mineral of tissue repair and protein synthesis. Hair is made of a protein called keratin. Without adequate zinc, your body cannot build keratin effectively, and the oil glands around your follicles cannot function properly. Zinc deficiency often shows up as thin, brittle, slow-growing hair.

Vitamin B12 is critical for red blood cell production. Remember the dark, sluggish blood from the bald patch? Anaemia from B12 deficiency makes this worse on a whole-body scale — your blood literally has less capacity to carry oxygen. Pair a B12 deficiency with the already poor microcirculation in the M-shape, and the follicles are suffocating twice over.

The Building Blocks: Omega-3s and Protein

Omega-3 fatty acids are powerful anti-inflammatory agents. Remember the DHT-driven inflammation and the deep scalp itch we discussed in Part 1? Omega-3s help calm that fire from the inside. They also keep the cell membranes of the follicle supple and healthy. A dry, brittle follicle environment leads to dry, brittle hair.

Adequate protein is the most basic and most overlooked requirement. Hair is pure protein — keratin. If your diet is low in protein, your body will ration it, and hair gets cut from the budget first. You need a consistent daily intake of quality protein — eggs, fish, meat, lentils, beans — to even provide the raw lumber for the construction project that is new hair growth.

The Sequence That Makes Sense

So here is the logical order of operations. Do not put the cart before the horse.

  • Get tested first — run the iron panel, check vitamin D, zinc, and B12 levels, and assess your daily protein and omega-3 intake honestly.
  • Correct deficiencies properly — if your ferritin is low, fix it; if your vitamin D is in the basement, supplement under guidance; if your protein is inadequate, increase it. Give this phase several weeks to months. You cannot squeeze blood from a stone, and you cannot grow hair from a depleted body.
  • Then intervene locally — once your internal nutrient levels are on the road to recovery, the local therapies (hijama, derma rolling, PRP, and quality oils) finally have something to work with. Now, when hijama extracts that dark stagnant blood, the fresh blood that rushes in will be rich with iron, oxygen, and all the raw materials the follicles have been starving for.

Clearing the Land, Then Feeding the Soil

Trying to force growth from the outside while the inside is empty will only lead to frustration. But correct the internal deficiency and then add a powerful extraction-and-healing protocol like hijama, and you’re no longer fighting uphill.
